Student commits suicide in Hyderabad, sparks strife in Kashmir, Pulwama under curfew

A PhD student of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Mudassir Kamran from Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room on Saturday after his roommate filed a police complaint against him alleging harassment. Kamran, 28, was doing his research in English Language Education.

According to Sub Inspector Satish Kumar, Investigating Officer of Osmania University Police Station, his roommate, Wasim Mohammed Salim, another PhD student from Pune, had first lodged a complaint against Kamran a fortnight ago. He had alleged that Kamran was harassing and picking up quarrels with him every day.

While the police was planning to summon Kamran, the Proctor Prof Hareesh Vizra and the faculty dean intervened. They requested the police not to pursue the matter and said they would sort it out. The police said university authorities had told they had received complaints against Kamran from many other students.

A routine inquiry by the police on Saturday revealed that Kamran and Salim were close friends. “But recently they had started fighting in the hostel due to which other students started complaining. When Salim started avoiding Kamran, he allegedly started harassing him,” Kumar said.

“I think he was disturbed because his best friend turned against him and lodged a compliant. He took the extreme step due to the number of complaints against him,” Kumar said.
