Two days after a false ceiling collapsed at the Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, forcing authorities to shift the registration counter for OPD patients and fee counters for tests to the emergency wing, there was complete chaos at the emergency wing on Monday.

Hundreds of OPD patients, who had turned up at the hospital, queued up in the emergency wing to get their cards made. This blocked the main entrance of the emergency wing, from where critical patients are brought in.

Consequently, the patients and their families entered into arguments over getting their cards made first instead of giving way to the patient who needed immediate attention.

The authorities tried to control the situation but it was of no help. On July 7 the heavy downpour caused a part of the roof to collapse leading to water logging inside the hospital’s hall, where the OPD registrations are done.

A senior doctor of the hospital administration said: “ We had brought this to the notice of the UT Engineering department two days back when it rained for just a few minutes and the roof was damaged. We did our best to ensure that the patients were not inconvenienced. We have been calling up engineering department to fix up the problem but all in vain”.
