Roaming Gets Cheaper For AirTel Network Users In Delhi

New Delhi: : Notwithstanding long distance revenue losses that may occur as a result of its latest initiative, AirTel announced that it would be offering a new facility which would allow AirTel subscribers in Delhi to call roamers on the Delhi AirTel network at almost local call charges. Dubbed subscriber local dialling facility (SLD), it would be commercially available from June 15. There is no charge for the service.

“With the new facility there would be substantial savings for subscribers, ranging from upto 88 per cent for national in-roamers and 72 per cent for AirTel subscribers in Delhi, to 45 per cent for international in-roamers,” said AirTel Delhi and UP (West) CEO Sarvjit S Dhillon. To use the SLD facility a subscriber has to key in the SLD code ‘#0’ followed by the country code and overseas number. The in-roamer has to log on to the AirTel network. AirTel has arrangements with 20 mobile service providers in India as well as international service providers, whereby a subscriber from any of these networks is automatically logged on to the AirTel network when he is in Delhi as the information is embedded in the subscriber’s SIM card.

The savings result because the call from a local AirTel subscriber is now routed directly to the in-roamer’s number via an SLD...
