If Taj Mahal can be given world heritage status for its preservation, then River Ganga too should be met with similar treatment, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti has said.

The leader, who made a stopover here while en-route to Bijnor, said this to reporters yesterday.

Expressing concern over increasing pollution in Ganga, Bharti said Centre should frame stringent legislation which would act as a deterrent against those intentionally polluting the sacred river.

The leader also said year 2012 should be dedicated to women and tough laws should be put in place to punish those accused of rape.
