Rise in swine flu cases, govt releases advisory
Health Minister Dr A K Walia said: “Five patients were admitted at RML Hospital this week — three were admitted on Wednesday. An advisory has been issued to all hospitals to make the required arrangements for swine flu patients.”
The patients at RML Hospital have been kept in isolation. Sources said one of the patients was referred from a private hospital, where the initial diagnosis was made.
Dr Walia said that 57 patients have been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, since January 1 this year. Three deaths were reported after patients developed respiratory complications — two of these were from private hospitals.
Medical experts said the virus has been known to surface during the winter months, after the monsoon. “A substantial population has by now become immune to the virus. People should maintain basic standards of hygiene, like washing hands frequently. There is no need to panic,” Dr Walia said.
