Rights panel seeks report on Islam book ‘confiscation’

The West Bengal Human Rights Commission today asked the police commissioner of Kolkata to submit a report on the alleged confiscation of copies of a book written by Nazrul Islam, an IPS officer of ADG rank in the state.
The commission was acting on a complaint lodged by Mitra and Ghosh, the publisher of the book Musalmander Koroniyo.
A senior official of the state commission said, “We received a complaint from the publisher. Chairman of the HRC has taken cognizance of the incident and directed the commissioner of police to get the incident investigated by a ‘responsible’ officer and submit a report to the commission on the incident in four weeks.”
The book, released 10 days ago, contains certain passages which are critical of the Trinamool Congress-led government’s policies.
