Mumbai: Renault-Nissan will set up a combined assembly line in place of two separate ones for Nissan and Renault respectively, as planned earlier, at the upcoming plant in Chennai.
"Globally, demand has crashed and we feel that it makes sense to go ahead with just one assembly line for the two alliance companies rather than spending on one more assembly line," said a Renault spokesperson.
Though it will lead to initial hiccups as far as production figures are concerned, the spokesperson said this was a step in line with the current market scenario. Renault-Nissan has many common elements like sharing powertrains that are jointly developed, he said.
"The plant has enough room for a second assembly line and we can expand depending on market conditions," he said.
Renault-Nissan will jointly own the body shop and paint shop facilities at the Chennai plant, among other back-end facilities.
"The investment figure of Rs 4,500 crore for the plant remains intact and will be made over a period of time extending till 2015." The plant is expected to roll out the first car in May-June 2010. It has a capacity of 4 lakh cars per annum.
In an earlier release, Nissan had said that the company's next generation Nissan Micra will be produced at the Chennai plant. Nissan will look at outsourcing engineering services from Chennai to support Nissan globally, the company had said.
