Registration fees pinch pockets, PGI says donations for alumni fund

Despite having surplus funds, the lone premier tertiary care institute of the region, PGIMER, which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee year and a two-day alumni meet, seems vary of spending on the event from its own pocket.

The institute has asked all its present faculty members to get themselves registered for the upcoming two-day meet after paying Rs 2, 000 (if they are a doctor) or Rs 3,000 (for a doctor couple).

In the current five-year plan, PGIMER has received Rs 1,740 crore, out of which Rs 232 crore was allocated this year.

Other than PGI’s present faculty, the institute is also charging Rs 2,000 from each alumnus, Rs 3,000 from couples and US $150 for individuals and US $200 for couples from outside India as registration fee for the alumni meet.

Prior to this, in October, PGI authorities had issued a circular to all department directing them to contribute to the alumni fund by using money meant to be used on holding medical conferences.

When contacted, PGI Official spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar said, “It is mandatory for all those who will register for the meet.”

According to a letter written to head of departments on October 9, Dr Chawla had stated that the PGI was trying to create an alumni fund corpus. It had therefore been decided to request organisers of continuing medical education (CME) programmes and conferences to contribute to the PGIMER alumni fund as a ‘kind gesture’.
