Kolkata, Dec 17: : Planning Commission member and former revenue secretary, NK Singh, said on Wednesday that he believed that inequality between the developed and backward states had substantially accentuated since India opted for reforms a decade ago. Hence, he suggested decentralisation, devolution of funds from the Centre’s kitty and its intervention in developing infrastructure in backward states to address the problems.
Mr Singh was speaking at an interactive session with Stanford Centre for International Development (SCID), Stanford University, USA, entitled ‘Economic Policy Reform Issues’.
He said economic divergence between the developed states such as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Punjab, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu and backward states such as Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, West Bengal and others had greatly accentuated and inequality had increased.
