



: Now that I am back in San Francisco all I keep hearing and reading about is the power of social networks and how it can help in brand building and help corporations reconnect with their users and customers. My email box is stuffed with pitches from various PR agencies telling me why I should interview their company or their CEO or why they have the best social networking application or widget. I must mention the reason I am getting these emails is because I am attending the AdTech West Conference in San Francisco next week. AdTech is “the” conference to attend if you are in the digital interactive marketing space.
When it comes to social networking it seems like Facebook has gained a lot of ground and momentum around the world in the past few months. For instance in India the trend appears to be that more people are switching over to Facebook from other social networking sites like Orkut. Given these developments, have you ever wondered how many Facebook installs, and how many developers are out there? You can stop wondering now and look at what Andonomics has to say: “There are 930,295,450 installs across 21,492 apps on Facebook with over 200,000 developers currently evaluating the platform.” That is not all, there are Facebook classes taught in Universities like Stanford, which is located a stone’s throw from Facebook’s headquarters. Stanford University’s experimental course in Facebook aims to close the gap between the creators and users of Facebook applications. “The gap between creator and user is getting smaller, but creators must learn how to gather and respond to user data. That is the purpose of this course.” What used to be described as lag time has almost disappeared, and widgets and applications for Facebook are created and deployed within days of conceptualising the idea.
So, to say there are a whole lot of people working away furiously in creating Facebook apps and widgets would be an understatement. What is very interesting to note is that only last year Facebook gave developers access to its Application Programming Interface (API). But in less than a year the number of widgets and developers on Facebook has grown through the roof.
