Record number of 22.37 lakh tourists visit Vivekananda rock

A record number of 22.37 lakh tourists visited the Vivekananda rock and the Tiruvalluvar Statue off the sea coast here in 2012, officials said today.

This was against the figure of 19.89 lakh tourists ferried last year, officials of the Poompuhar Shipping Corporation, operating the ferry service between Kanyakumari and Vivekanandha rock, said.

They said the corporation was operating three services – Guhan,Bagirathi,and Pothigai.

The ferry service was held on all days,except when the sea was rough or the wind speed was not conducive.

The officials said only during July the season was lean with ferries carrying only 1.19 lakh people.In all other months, the service was crowded.
