Seeking to end frequent airing of the demand for making Narendra Modi the Prime Ministerial candidate, BJP president Rajnath Singh on Monday issued a virtual gag order to partymen, which was echoed by its ally JD(U), but faced open defiance by his colleagues C P Thakur and Shatrughan Sinha.

Concerned over fissures within NDA on the issue of declaring the Gujarat chief minister the PM candidate of NDA, Singh made a “final appeal” to his party leaders not to speak on the issue.

“I want to humbly appeal to BJP workers and leaders that there should be no statement from them on who will be the candidate for the Prime Minister's post. As I have said earlier, the BJP convention is that any decision on the chief ministerial or prime ministerial candidate is taken by the Central Parliamentary Board,” he said.

Singh's comments came in the wake of demands from BJP leaders like Ram Jethmalani and Yashwant Sinha that Modi be made the party's PM candidate. Other leaders have also reacted in the media to the debate, resulting in spilling out of the differences over the issue within NDA.

President of BJP's key ally JD(U) Sharad Yadav also demanded an end to the “mad rush” among NDA leaders to speak on the issue.

Yadav, who is also NDA convenor, said parties of the BJP-led alliance should rather focus on key issues confronting the nation like corruption, unemployment and economic crisis.

“I have never seen such a mad rush for prime ministership in the last six decades,”

Modi only hope, next bet Kejriwal

By not declaring Mr Narendra Modi as its candidate for PM before 2014 elections, BJP would only ruin its chances in the hustings. There is no other leader in the country to match Modi in mass appeal, proven track record of development work and absolute clarity without any ambiguity on issues facing the country. He has the backing of captains of Industries as well. Modi is also in a position to form his own brand of BJP(M) and claim his 'party' as the real BJP,the way Mrs Indira Gandhi did with her break away Congress(I) to sideline the syndicate of Morarji Desai, SK Patil & Co. Ms Sushma Swaraj is no doubt a promising leader for the future, but does not have the charisma to carry the people with her, the way Modi can do single-handedly. Unfortunately, Mr LK Advani is missing the bus because of age factor. Congress with its dynastic heritage and track record of scams has no chance whatsoever in 2014. People may as well back Kejriwal's AAP in case Modi is not projected by BJP.

Poor, Modi !!!

Remove the Gag Order

NC Sinha | 05-Feb-2013Reply | Forward
It's pointless to put a gag order. When the whole country is seized with this concern with who to lead India out of this morass and one name that is making round for right or wrong reasons is that of Modi. The party should take this factor into account and try to assess the mood of the nation. And the sooner it does so the better, for whoever is named will have to work out strategies for the election. Why then evade the question. If you have to face the gauntlet, face it now. Why tarry and give time to your adversaries?
