A three-day weekend gives the film a good head-start at box office

Out of the three films - Race 2, Akaash Vani and Main Krishna Hoon - which released last week, it was the Saif Ali Khan-John Abraham starrer Race 2 that received a maximum attention at the box office.

“After Dabangg 2 which released on December 21 last year, Race 2 has come as a good entertainer after a considerable gap. Hence it was appreciated by the audiences,” observes trade analyst Vinod Mirani.

A franchisee of director duo Abbas-Mustan’s Race, the sequel got as good a reception as did the original. It collected 51.35 crore in its opening week at the domestic box office. The long weekend - Eid on Friday, Republic Day on Saturday and Sunday being a weekly off worked in favour of the film. As per the figures announced by producers Disney UTV, the movie received 15.12 crore on its opening day, which jumped to 20.72 crore on Saturday, and on Sunday went back to 15.51 crore.

“Getting an opening of 15 crore figure on Friday and Sunday is not bad at all. The film’s collection shot up on Saturday as it was a dry day. People prefer watching movies in theatres on that day,” opines Girish Wankhede, General Manager Marketing and Public Relations for Cinemax India Ltd. About the success of the film, Wankhede said, “A film like Race 2, which has lavish sets, spectacular locations, good looking actors in trendy outfits and chart buster music, should release, at least, once in two-three months. It comes as a refreshing change for the audience.” At Cinemax India, it received an average of 65-70 per cent occupancy over the weekend.

The film also got a good reception at single screens. According to Rakesh Sippy, owner of Chitra, a single-screen theatre in Mumbai, the multi-starrer had 100 per cent occupancy on Friday and Saturday, with a marginal drop on Sunday (as seen in plexes).

The overseas market saw the movie make a total of more than $ 3.2 million. The cinemas were shut on Friday in Pakistan, but the movie took off on Saturday and received a collection of $ 151,000, which is almost same as UK on day one. US and UAE are both poised at $ 1 million each, while the the opening weekend in Australia collected $ 192,938. Interestingly, UK collections were higher than Dabangg 2 and Cocktail with
