Race 2 rushes ahead
A three-day weekend gives the film a good head-start at box office
Out of the three films - Race 2, Akaash Vani and Main Krishna Hoon - which released last week, it was the Saif Ali Khan-John Abraham starrer Race 2 that received a maximum attention at the box office.
“After Dabangg 2 which released on December 21 last year, Race 2 has come as a good entertainer after a considerable gap. Hence it was appreciated by the audiences,” observes trade analyst Vinod Mirani.
A franchisee of director duo Abbas-Mustan’s Race, the sequel got as good a reception as did the original. It collected 51.35 crore in its opening week at the domestic box office. The long weekend - Eid on Friday, Republic Day on Saturday and Sunday being a weekly off worked in favour of the film. As per the figures announced by producers Disney UTV, the movie received 15.12 crore on its opening day, which jumped to 20.72 crore on Saturday, and on Sunday went back to 15.51 crore.
“Getting an opening of 15 crore figure on Friday and Sunday is not bad at all. The film’s collection shot up on Saturday as it was a dry day. People prefer watching movies in theatres on that day,” opines Girish Wankhede, General Manager Marketing and Public Relations for Cinemax India Ltd.
