Utpal Ghosh, Product Director, HRMS, eHorizon India
Travelling for work has been a regular phenomenon in my professional life. I have gone to several places — on short tours and also long stays. But given a choice, I would want to work in Bangkok, Thailand. According to me it is the best city to work in. I went to Bangkok in the year 1997 and was there for quite sometime.
Bangkok has a commendable work culture. The people are very forward-looking people and have a positive attitude in almost everything they do. The infrastructure is up to the mark and at par with those in western countries. Work life is easy and travelling to work is very convenient. Public transport is very frequent and the public cooperative. There are both AC and non-AC bus services. Taxis and rickshaws are also a common mode of transport. However, most people avail the monorails to travel within the city. Moreover, the population is not as high as in India and thus there is hardly any rush or congestion.
Free of pollution, Bangkok is a well maintained city with enough facility for all and sundry. People have their own culture and there chief religion is Buddhism. People are well behaved and their approach is friendly enough to make you feel at home. At work place too the atmosphere is very congenial but at the same time they have very good professional ethics. They are very punctual and maintain a very systematic work-life.
In fact, that is the best thing about the city — people manage their time really well. They have a balanced work-life balance. There are malls and many public places where one could spend leisure hours. Cooking at home is not a compulsion as people can order food from anywhere. The quality of food is good and at par with home-made food.
The biggest problem that I faced in Bangkok was communicating to them. English is not a popular language and people at large hardly understand in English. However, the city is fast developing and there are interpreters who are now there to help one on the language.
Otherwise, life in Bangkok is easy as a whole. It is a safe place to work without much political interference or stringent rules that would hamper fast business development. Given a choice, I would want to work in Bangkok than in any other city in the world.
