Sugar production has risen marginally by 2% to 13.63 million tonnes during the October-January period, an industry body said on Friday. Mills had produced 13.35 million tonne of sugar in the same period of the last marketing year that starts from October. The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories said in a release that sugar production in Maharashtra, India's biggest sugar producing state, stood at 4.7 million tonne. The output in second largest producing state Uttar Pradesh was 3.58 million tonne in the review period.

Mauritius, India to discuss investment

Mauritius will discuss this month the investment potential in the county's textile sector with Indian industry leaders. “The industry, commerce and consumer protection minister of Mauritius will visit India (this month) (and) discuss the possibilities for Indian investment in the textiles sector with captains of the Indian industry,” a joint statement of the textiles ministry of India and Mauritius said on Friday.

Wheat sowing continues to lag behind

Area under wheat has continued to lag behind at 297.61 lakh hectares so far in the current rabi season as compared to 298.59 lakh hectares in the year-ago period, according to the government data released on Friday. Rice acreage is also down at 14.76 lakh hectares, as against 20.42 lakh hectare in the corresponding period last year.
