The Goa government on Tuesday assured the agitating fishing trawler owners that they would be given subsidy on diesel, the price of which was recently hiked by the Centre. The trawler owners have anchored their vessels since Saturday, protesting against the R11/litre hike effected by the central government on bulk purchase of diesel. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar told the assembly on Tuesday that the government would give subsidy to trawler owners on diesel purchases. The issue was raised by BJP legislator Benjamin D'Silva on the floor of the House.

Gem exports likely to rise 15% in 2013

India’s gem and jewellery exports are expected to rise 15% in 2013 against $38.28 billion worth of overseas shipments in the previous year, a leading industry official said on Tuesday. “Silver exports are likely to go up by 25-30% this year against $797 million a year ago, Pankaj Kumar Parekh, vice-chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, told a news conference.

India ships most of its gems and jewellery to the US but exporters have been trying to diversify into other markets as well.
