The large industrial growth coupled with the flair of spending on machines, has given a push to the premium car segment in Punjab. Despite the diminishing agriculture growth, Punjab is turning into a luxury state, as BMW, Skoda, Audis, Volvos and Mercedes find space in the hearts and garage of the state. Increase in sales of automobiles in the luxury segment validates the fact that the people of Punjab are ready to shell money for their dream machines.
No wonder, recognising the potential northern region, Audi India plans to come up with its exclusive showroom in Chandigarh in mid of April.
According to spokesperson of Audi India, Bettina Bernhardt, "The Indian market for luxury cars is growing, with a noticeable increase of around 50% per year. The growth is small, but we expect more Indian customers to purchase high-end cars, especially in Punjab. Audi has sold 350 cars in India last year, with three dealerships in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. We plan to sell around 1,000 Audi models this year in India besides, increasing our dealerships network."
Another luxury auto major BMW has already sold 250 units till March 31, 2008 in the region, half of the sales coming from Punjab. Currently, there's only one dealership in the northern region for BMW cars, based in Chandigarh. This dealership caters to Punjab, Haryana and Himachal. Looking at the huge potential for luxury car segment, the company is also planning to open another dealership in Ludhiana next year.
Talking to The Indian Express, Sachit Passi, owner of dealership for BMW cars in the city said, "Industrialists and the NRI belt have given a boost to the sales of premium cars. Besides, service and IT sector is set to grow in the state, which will encourage many young professionals to buy their dream cars. Above all, Punjabis like to spend, which remains the biggest factor for high sales of cars."
After studying the Punjab market, Swedish major Volvo has also launched its second dealership in Mohali, recently. Paul de Voijs, managing director, Volvo Car India said, "The dealership will reach out to the consumers in the entire Punjab region covering cities like Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Punjab is an important market for us as and we are looking at selling 100 cars in this region in a year." These cars are priced at Rs...
