The N Rangasamy government in Puducherry is facing its first major test in the form of a minister who is evading arrest by the Tamil Nadu Police for reportedly using an impersonator to write an examination for him.

Education Minister P M L Kalyanasundaram is on the run ever since the High Court of Madras rejected his plea for anticipatory bail on Tuesday. Five teams of the TN Crime Branch are on the minister’s trail.

Kalyanasundaram, a first-time member of the territorial assembly, is a high school dropout who turned to business before getting a ticket and winning under the banner of the newly-floated Congress splinter, AINRC. He said he felt obliged to clear his Class X as he was the education minister.

The widespread appreciation soon turned into disbelief when it was alleged that he had used a proxy to write the supplementary exam for science paper. TN education department got a complaint in this regard and kept a vigil, but the minister did not appear for the social science paper.

As the controversy grew bigger and was taken up by opposition, especially the AIADMK, one-time ally of his party, Kalyanasundaram went underground.

Sources said he was close to being arrested when his car was intercepted by the TN Police at Marakkanam near the border while he was heading to Puducherry from Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu. But by the time the personnel reached his vehicle, he escaped.
