Punjab Technical University (PTU) seems to be engaged in acts of philanthropy for the Punjab Police. The university installed 35 solar lights worth Rs 16,000 each at Kapurthala Police Line. The university had made a four-member committee, including deputy registrar and assistant registrar to get the work done, PTU sources said.

Kapurthala SSP Inderbir Singh said, “It was our initiative, but when PTU authorities got to know about it, they offered to install it under their research programme pertaining to non-conventional energy”.

Sources said that PTU had indirectly repaid the Kapurthala Police, which had helped PTU authorities who had made a complaint regarding rampant cheating at learning centres under the distance education programme of PTU in 15 states.

PTU had filed a complaint with the Kapurthala police on October 23, following which the police conducted simultaneous raids at all the offices of Gugnani brothers in Delhi, Patna, Bhopal, Kolkata and North East states, and arrested two of Gugnani’s associates on October 26.

PTU sources said that there were many slums in Kapurthala and surrounding areas where such philanthropy was required, but PTU chose the police for obvious reasons. PTU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dr Rajneesh Arora, who inaugurated the lights, was not available for comments.
