BREAKING her silence over the speculation about her formal entry into politics and taking up a leadership role in the Congress, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said the “constant conjecture” about her assuming posts in the party was “incorrect” and asked everyone to desist from fuelling such “baseless rumours.”

“The constant conjecture about my assuming various posts in the Congress party and the manner in which this issue is brought up at opportune moments is incorrect,” she said Friday amid a renewed clamour in the party for giving a larger role. The speculation had also become ammunition for the government to target Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

“I would be very grateful to all concerned if they desisted from encouraging such baseless rumours,” she added. Her statement seeking to quash the speculation about her entry into politics, which springs up every now and then and triggers excitement in Congress circles, came a day after the Congress officially said it wanted all three members of Gandhi family to take leadership roles in the party.

Sources in the party said the government’s attack on Rahul after reports about her entry into politics could have prompted Priyanka to come out with a statement. After Rahul stormed the Well of the House seeking a discussion on the spurt in communal incidents, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had attacked him saying his “contrived aggression” was because of the “palace coup” in the party.

“The last thing we want now, when the party has just suffered a severe setback, is such distractions,” a senior Congress leader said.

While many leaders have gone public demanding that Priyanka enter politics and take a leadership role in the Congress, many other were skeptical about the impact it would create. Many argue it would mean accepting Rahul Gandhi as a failure.
