Principal of Pune school held for land scam in Hyderabad

‘Sold Army land for Rs 18.5 crore’; school maintaining secrecy, say parents.

The principal of a city school and her spouse were arrested in Hyderabad for allegedly trying to sell defence land to a Hyderabad-based education trust for Rs 18.5 crore, claiming to be the owners.

The couple, remanded in judicial custody, is now lodged in Chanchalguda Central Jail, Hyderabad, sources said.

They said the Hyderabad Central Crime Station (CCS) police arrested D Ahluwalia (Reena Jalnawala), the principal of Vibgyor International School, Pune (Vibgyor High), NIBM Road, and her husband Kusro Jalnawala, a resident of Salunke Vihar in Army Co-operative Housing Society, on January 26.

According to Hyderabad police, the couple, claiming to be owners of a plot of land at Bowenpally in Secunderabad Cantonment, sold it to Tavinder Singh Kohli, the managing trustee of Guru Nanak Educational Society, Bollarum Road. The couple reportedly collected Rs 18.5 crore from Kohli in several tranches through cheques.

Kohli later came to know it was defence land and that he had been shown fabricated ownership documents. He lodged a police complaint.

Hyderabad CCS police inspector P Madhukumar Swamy said, “Investigations revealed Jalnawala, posing as a military officer, had shown an open land near the Military Dairy Farm at Bowenpally and Bhaktavarguda and furnished fabricated documents.”

Hyderabad police said a magisterial court remanded the couple in 14-day judicial custody. They said that the police have not recovered any money from the suspects so far.

Can IE do a detailed study on the "schools business"

Thanks for bringing this out Indian Express (Atik). Schools have become a "business" now than about education. We the parent community will truly appreciate if you can do a detailed analysis of the scene here and expose those schools that are functioning as a money making machinery. I know of schools that demand "donation" and only in cash and/or will refuse to provide a receipt for the money given. These are typically schools who are building the infrastructure as new students get admitted etc.. The other significant trend is of course all the real estate companies getting into the schools "business". Leadership from organizations such as yours is really needed here.
