The placement season at premier B-schools has started on a mixed note with a few like the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) at Bangalore and Lucknow getting a slew of pre-placement offers (PPOs) and pre-placement interviews (PPIs) while others like the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) still waiting for companies to make such offers.

Till date, IIMB) has received 57 PPOs and 26 PPIs compared with 93 PPOs last year. “More PPOs will be coming in. PPOs can come in till December when our lateral placements begin. A large number of the PPOs are from consulting firms. Other sectors such as marketing, finance and IT have also offered PPOs. Financial institutions and banks normally send their PPOS a little later in the year,” said IIMB career development services head Sapna Agarwal.

Even the new IIMs, like the one at Rohtak, have already notched PPOs from majors like Tata Motors and Berger Paints.

PPOs are offered by companies based on students’ performance during the two-month summer internship period while PPIs are interviews with a company for students who have interned with them and may later convert into a PPO.

When it comes to conversion rates, almost 90% of the PPOs are accepted by at IIMB students. IIM Lucknow has already notched more than 50 PPOs and 35 PPIs and all the traditional recruiters like McKinsey and Boston Consulting Group have made their offers. “There has been 100% conversion from these traditional recruiters for the last three years. The PPOs are looking better with a good turnout,” said IIML recruitment co-ordinator Nitin KV.

At IIFT, from the 14 PPOs and PPIs received around this time in 2011, the number has risen to 35 till date. Colgate-Palmolive, Goldman Sachs and Flipkart, among others, have already released PPOs this year.

“Summer internship is an important and integral part of the post-graduate programme at IIFT. Internship is a key parameter for recruitment for many esteemed companies. PPOs/PPIs do offer big opportunity to the students. There are many big brands which are likely to come to the IIFT campus this year,”
