New Delhi, January 4: : The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will aim to involve the Indian diaspora in development of education and health care in rural areas of the country, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi said on Friday.
“We are expecting a good response from thousands of NRIs and persons of Indian origin for their involvement in development programmes at block level,” Ravi said in New Delhi.
“There are two ways of involvement - philanthropy and investment. Whichever way they choose, we would facilitate them by creating a single window system,” he said.
The sixth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is being held in the capital from January 7 to 9. The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs was instituted in 2004 to promote, nurture and sustain the two-way relationship between India and its diaspora.
Overseas Indians are now increasingly examining opportunities for investing or doing business in India.
Pointing out that investment by NRIs in the last ten years has been very negligible, Ravi said the volume can be increased by their active participation in various programmes.
“We want to make it a movement by involving diaspora for women empowerment and children welfare at block, panchayat and village level. Individuals can choose villages for their participation in development work,” he said.
