New Delhi: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has called a meeting tomorrow to review the implementation of austerity measures announced in the wake of drought and the economic slowdown that had put pressure on government finances.

The meeting will be attended by financial advisors attached to various central ministries and departments, sources said.

The Finance Ministry in September had asked various ministries and departments to cut non-plan expenditure by ten per cent.

Besides, it had asked them not to hold conferences in five star hotels.

The mandatory ten per cent cut in non-plan expenditure include spending on publications, professional services, advertising and publicity, office expenses, petrol, oil, lubricants except for security related requirements and other administrative expenses.

The remaining portions of non-plan expenditure are subjected to a five per cent cut.

However, interest payments, repayment of debt, defence capital expenditure, salaries, pension and grants to states are not part of the austerity measures.

why pilots of AIR INDIA are put up in 5 STAR HOTELS ? this is giving them a FALSE SENSE OF SUPEIORITY COMPLEX---because of this superiority comp[lex they never bother to listen to cmd or minister----PILOTS MUST BE PUT UP IN BUDGET HOTELS---IF ANY PILOT IS UNWILLING HE CAN RESIGN AND GO--WHY APPEASEMENT?

Pranabda, first audit the expenditure on unnecessary advertisement by government agencies with photos of congress leaders and tell the country how much you are going to reduce the same in the coming years. Similarly with ads on anniversary days of birth,death, marriage, of your party's (and not nation's) great leaders.

Mr.FM the drive started by you and your party for austerity meausures is a welcome step.But do go deep into the problem and you will find that crores and crores can be saved by scrapping some govt.offices and undertakings which just exist for name sake and offices doing duplication of work.That audit can tell you the number of officeswhich need closure and you save on salary and establishment costs.Many govt. office which run from hired premises can be closed or shifted to existing govt. buildings thus saving huge amount on rents paid to the landlord mafia which is in collusion with corrupt officials.Simply stoppage of first class travel by Air will save only few pennies. Stop funding of sick undertakings of govt which eat up a huge amount every month like Air India,HMT,HEC,Hotel corp. just to name a few and an exercise should be undertaken for redeployment of thier staff in other undertakings/ministries.This should be done with minimum period of time table so that steam is not lost.
