Pune, Aug 27: Praj Industries Limited has got the board nod to foray into software and IT related business. Praj chairman Pramod Chaudhari said the company would focus on the software and IT related business as an independent new entity.

This will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Praj and will be located at its HQ in Pune. Details of the project will be ready by October 2004 and the company will be operational before March 2005, Mr Chaudhari said.

Realising the IT related potential Praj had established its engineering software division last year. This was with a view to ramp up the IT enabled engineering business. The company has now decided to venture into this business. Praj will offer engineering software, both products and services, in the domains it is currently operating in. Mr Chaudhari will be exploring business potential in the US and look at offering these solutions to its existing customers also. “This engineering software business will provide sustainable along different axis. It will help in the scale up of Praj’s existing business,” he said.

Praj has also set up a EOU unit which augments its current manufacturing capacity. Praj’s existing capacity is about 2,000 tonne while the EOU will have 800 tonne capacity and is located at Alandi, near Pune. Majority of the exports will be routed through this plant, Mr Chaudhari said.

Mr Chaudhuri said increasing orders from the global market was an indication of the level of confidence international customers had in the company’s knowledge level and expertise. Apart from current orders from Colombia, Thailand and Australia, Praj has also bagged an assignment in North America. “We have a foot-in-the-door with an assignments of technical evaluation for upgradation of a distillery plant in North America,” he said.

At the AGM held on Friday, the company appointed investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala as an additional director on the board. Mr Jhunjhunwala has picked up a 12.5 per cent stake in Praj. As part of its corporate social responsibility, the company also announced the setting up of the Praj Foundation.
