Post Delhi gangrape, more victims coming forward in Haryana

Attribute it to the public outcry over the gangrape and subsequent death of a Delhi girl or the quick action in the Patiala gangrape and suicide case, more and more victims of sexual assault are now coming forward to report the crimes in Haryana — a state with one of the worst sex ratio.

With nearly a dozen such cases being reported in the last one week, the state police force has been kept busy taking cognisance of such complaints and pushing the ‘accused’ behind the bars.

One such case came to light in Sonepat, where a widow, a resident of Chitana village, alleged that she was gangraped and threatened by three persons eight months ago. She alleged the accused, identified as Manoj, his brother Sunil and their friend Harvansh, had barged into her house and raped her. They also allegedly sold her plot by duping her. The police got her medically examined and based on her complaint, on Sunday arrested the trio on charges of rape, criminal intimidation and cheating.

In another incident, a 26-year-old woman in Hisar alleged that she was repeatedly raped over two years her father-in-law, Suresh. In her complaint to Satheesh Balan, Superintendent of Police, Hisar, she alleged that a few weeks ago also, Suresh allegedly raped her in a fields when she was returning from her parents’ home in Hisar to Gurgaon with him. The complainant’s parents have alleged that she is mentally challenged and Suresh was taking advantage of her medical situation
