Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting overtook Rahul Dravid to become the second highest Test run scorer during the opening day of the third Test against the West Indies.

Veteran Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has the highest total of Test runs with 15,470 at an average of 55.44, Sport 24 reports.

Ponting edged past Dravid's career total of 13,288 runs after scoring 23. He was caught by West Indies captain Darren Sammy at leg-slip off off- spinner Shane Shillingford.

Rahul Dravid retired from international cricket last month.

Punter is one of the greats of the game undoubtedly but a the same time he can never ever beat sachin as highest run scorer in test cricket. Punter has 13,289 runs to his name while the latter has 15470 runs to his name.Looking at the difference between the runs scored by these two,it seems Punter will need at least 1-2 good calender years to go beyond SRT.The way Punter is batting in the current Aus- WI series,it seems his test career is about to end, and if he is not willing to retire from test cricket then it will be Cricket Australia (CA) who will be doing it.It will be a huge disappointment for Punter and his fans if CA does this, like it did with Punter in ODIs.He was sacked because of consistent low scores in ODIs and what we've seen in the ongoing series against WI is just a sequel to it.Its better if Punter voluntarily calls it a day and walks back with pride as one of the greatest ever Australian next to Sir don Bradman, giving up the dream of top scorer in test cricket

No one can break sachin's record as he has decided to play as long as he can walk. Selectors do not have a say on this issue.
