PNB to lock horns with ONGC in Gurmit Memorial final

Yudvir played a pivotal role in steering Punjab National Bank (PNB) to the final as his penalty corner in the 51st minute turned out to be difference in the end as they defeated Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), 3-2, in the semi-final encounter of the 42nd SN Vohra All India Gurmit Memorial hockey tournament, at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

It was the PNB team who took the lead in as early as the fourth minute. Ajitesh sounded the board through a field goal to put PNB ahead. However, Deepak Thakur converted a penalty corner to restore parity for IOC in the 22nd minute. Three minutes later, Jatinder once again put PNB ahead after converting a penalty corner.

After the breather, Deepak scored his second goal of the match in the 50th minute to level the score 2-2. Just a minute later, Yudvir converted a penalty corner that turned out to be the winning goal for PNB.

They will face ONGC in the final who defeated Punjab and Sind Bank, 4-3, via penalty shootout after the match ended in 1-1 draw. Mandeep opened the account for ONGC in the 11th minute through a superb field goal. Paramdeep soon restored parity for PSB through a field goal in the 29th minute. The outcome of the match was then decided through penalty shootout. ONGC managed to convert three penalty strokes while Punjab and Sind Bank managed just two.
