New Delhi, Jan 19: The government has drawn up ambitious plans for spreading the benefits of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to other urban centers in India, BK Chaturvedi, secretary, ministry of petroleum & natural gas said while speaking at a seminar on ‘Alternative Energy Driven Vehicles’ at the 7th Auto Expo 2004.
The availability of natural gas will soon improve with the arrival of LNG in Dahej by the end of this month, Mr Chaturvedi added.
On alternate fuels like hydrogen, he said that it is the emerging new technology world over and said that by the year 2006-07, India will have 1,000 3-wheelers running on hydrogen under a pilot programme.
Issues like the the availability of hydrogen, transportation of hydrogen under high pressure and storage still remain as some of the challenges, Mr Chaturvedi added.
Mr Chaturvedi said that with free availability of natural gas, it would be possible to start dispensing CNG in cities not covered so far.
The government plans to introduce CNG in cities located along or close to the existing gas pipeline network.
At a later date, when the gas pipeline network is extended to cover the untouched regions of the country, for which the government had planned for the creation of a national gas grid, other cities will also get covered in a phased manner, he added.
