You may be eligible for Ph D just after graduation if a proposal in this regard gets the Government's nod.

A committee, appointed by the Government to suggest academic activities and functioning of the 14 upcoming world class universities, is seriously mulling over this idea which is seen as a step to attract more students to research.

The new system, if implemented, would bypass the conventional route of doing Ph.D after Master and M.Phil programmes.

"The proposal is that the new 14 universities will introduce a four-year under-graduate course with direct mobility to Ph.D. Those who want to do MA, they can as well do so by additional one-year course after four-year graduation," UGC Chairman Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, who heads the committee, said.

The rationale behind such proposal is that in the conventional system, students tend to lose interest for Ph.D after they spend three years of graduation, two years for Masters degree and again two years for M.Phil.

"The conventional method is a long route. The new proposal on Ph.D would cut short on M.Phil and Masters," he said.

The proposal assumes significance in view of less number of students taking interest into research.

"This is a good idea. The committee will discuss it and take a final decision on it with a month time," Thorat said.

It is advisable to stick to the conventional method alone.Ph.D programme is a research programme and its pursuit requires some measure of maturity on the part of the candidate who pursues it.Mere research proclivities alone are not sufficient.I plead for continuation of existing system.

Doing PhD is OK. What about appropriate opportunities after that? I am talking especially about PhD in engineering. My experience is in India in Industries the mindset is not developed. We also have to work on this to change the mindset of industries towards PhDs.
