Perfetti eyes Rs 2,000 cr turnover, plans 4th plant in India

Italian firm Perfetti, the maker of popular confectionery products such as Mentos, Happydent and Center Fresh, is eyeing a turnover of Rs 2,000 crore in India next fiscal and plans to set up fourth plant in the country.

"The company is likely to record a turnover of Rs 1,700 crore in the the current financial year. The projection for the next fiscal is Rs 1,900-2,000 crore," Stefano Pelle, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, PerfettiVan Melle Group, said.

The company owns popular candy and chewing gum brands like Mentos, Happydent, Chloromint, Alpenlibe and Center Fresh in India, where it has three manufacturing plants - in Delhi, Chennai and Uttarakhand. Pelle said a total of 50 million units of these brands are consumed every day in India.

Perfetti, which had a modest beginning in India in 1994 with its plant in Delhi, had a turnover of Rs 130 crore in 1998. The additional facilities in Chennai and Uttarakhand added to the business, he said.

The Italian company is scouting for land in East India to set up its fourth facility in the country, Pelle said.

The firm, known for innovative ad campaigns of its products, feels the quality of the final product and commercials both are responsible for its business growth. "Advertisement campaigns can get you customer for the first time. But if he does not like the product he will not buy it again. So both, the campaign and product, are equally important.
