: Pramoud Rao, MD, Zicom Securities Systems Ltd, spoke to with Abhay Rao of The Financial Express about security issues, protective solutions and the need for investing in such security measures in this day and age. Excerpts.

Have you seen any spike in demand for security systems, post the most recent terror attacks?

Yes. As a matter of fact, there has been a major increase in the number of inquiries we have gotten for security systems post these terror attacks in Mumbai. They have come from companies, individuals, shops and even the government, all of which have taken a keen interest on how to secure themselves suddenly. However, such a reaction is not surprising in anyway, as this always happens a few days after a terror attack in any city. This trend lasts for a few days, after which it sadly dies down. I am really hoping that people have finally woken up and are now seeing red, realising how precarious the security in our country truly is and not just having another knee-jerk reaction. The security market has grown no doubt, but it is more inquiries that are coming on as an immediate reaction. Whether this time round these reactions get converted into something more, and influence people enough to change their age old mindsets about security is yet to be seen.

How do you ideally go about deciding on security systems and procedures required to safeguard lives and property?

It is really shocking and amusing the way we come across certain customers who buy a security product from us and our services without a clue as to what they are. The majority of people who have installed gadgets, have done so without a clue as to whether this is enough or even all that useful to them. They buy a gadget here and there based on some sort of reassurance and usefulness of that security product given by a friend. The concept of security as something serious enough to allow professionals to help is still not being accepted here. We too prefer when a client calls us to go over and look at the premise ourselves, to best decide what that place needs, and to even customise and modify some of our systems that should be used there, to better suit an area.
