Panjab University placement drive slows down

Blame it either on slowdown or lack of will on the part of departments, the central placement drive — Avsar 2013 — held at Panjab University has witnessed a downward trend in the number of companies visiting, students registering and the total number of students being shortlisted and jobs being offered.

The “highest” package offered this time — Rs 8.4 lakh per annum — remained the same as last year. Incidentally, it was Lovely Professional University (LPU), Jalandhar, which offered this package.

This year, LPU offered a package of Rs 9.4 lakh for one having ME degree and pursuing PhD degree from University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET). But no suitable candidate was found.

The minimum package offered this time was of Rs 1.8 lakh per annum in case of graduate students. Again, it was the same as last year.

While 40 companies participated in the recruitment drive last year, 31 companies came this time. As many as 1,384 students were registered last year as compared to 1,258 this year. While 471 students were shortlisted last year, 260 students were shortlisted this year. Unlike last year, when 154 students got job letters, the number came down to 70 this time.

However, placement coordinators say the number of the students getting jobs could go up as some of the companies that had postponed their visit are likely to come shortly.
