New Delhi, Sep 30: Minister of state with independent charge of labour and employment, Oscar Fernandes, on Tuesday sought to ease the prevailing tension between him and India Inc by stressing on the need to build, “a relationship between the management and labourers.” The minister was in the eye of a storm last week over his comments about the ghastly murder of Graziano Transmission CEO L K Chaudhary by the plant’s ex-employees.

Calling for greater communication between employers and employees, Fernandes said if workers are informed about management decisions, there would be no problems. “If workers demand higher wages but the company is suffering losses, the situation should be explained to them. They would then understand. In small units where the management and labourers work together, there are no differences. But in big units, a manager can’t work with workers,’ Fernandes told reporters here.

“All of us are shaken by the killing of the CEO. Ours is a country where ahimsa (non-violence) is followed… no one can accept violence, whether from the management or the labourers. We should maintain peace,” Fernandes said.

At the same time, the minister expressed his concerns about the growing socio-economic discontent in the country, saying, “In 150 districts, we have a naxalite movement and a revolution has taken place in our neighbouring country Nepal . So, we should live in reality,” he said, replying to a query about what could reduce clashes between labourers and the management.

Reacting to Chaudhary’s murder last week, Fernandes had said that India Inc should consider itself warned about the ‘simmering discontent’ among workers. Following an intervention by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from New York and a meeting with external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee, defence minister A K Antony and home minister Shivraj Patil, Fernandes apologised for his remarks.
