Only plots up to 300 sqm need stilt parking: Corpn

Municipal officials have proposed to abolish a rule that makes it mandatory for residential buildings more than 300 square metres to have stilt parking within the plot.

Authorities had in 2011 made it mandatory for all new buildings between 100 square metres and 1,000 square metres to have stilt parking to tide over the increasing parking shortage.

But the South municipality has now proposed stilt parking should be mandatory only for buildings from 100 square metres to 300 square metres, and optional for those between 300 square metres and 1,000 square metres.

An official at the Directorate of Local Bodies, the government arm that supervises the city’s three municipalities, said they received the proposal last month.

An official said the proposal follows petitions by residents that the limit on the height of buildings should be raised to create additional space for stilt parking.

“Ever since stilt parking was made mandatory last year, South Delhi residents have requested the Urban Development ministry and the Lieutenant-Governor to increase the height limit for residential buildings from 15 metres to 18 metres to create space for stilt parking,” the official said.

Another senior official said stilt parking is proposed to be optional for buildings between 300 square metres and 1,000 square metres because large houses usually keep sufficient surface parking space.
