Truck climbs atop median, hits three cars, 2 two-wheelers, and two people on a cycle

In apparent haste to jump the lights before they turned red, a truck driver hit three cars, two two-wheelers and a cycle, killing a person on the spot on Friday. Four persons were rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16.

The truck was going towards the railway station. As it came from the IT park side about 8 pm, there were only five seconds on the timer and the driver hurried up to avoid the red signal at the Railway Station Light Point. “Besides the traffic light, I signalled him to stop but he did not. I had to rush to get out of his way,” said Traffic Police constable Rampal.

After the truck driver lost control of the vehicle, it climbed atop the median, hitting the traffic which was on the opposite side of the road waiting for the green signal. The truck driver claimed he was trying to apply brakes but there was some technical problem due to which he could not.

Industrial Area SHO Inspector Narinder Patial said, “Though the truck driver is claiming that his brakes were not working, the truck will be checked and the driver will be made to go through a medical examination to ascertain if he was drunk.”
