The Delhi government is planning to revive Delhi Urban Mass Transit Authority (DUMTA) Act, 2009, to ensure better coordination between Traffic Police and the Transport department in the city.

The step comes after the December 16 gangrape incident, which highlighted the lack of coordination between the Transport department and Traffic Police.

The Act will help bring all agencies under one umbrella, for better planning and traffic control in the city.

“The gangrape incident highlighted the lack of coordination between the Transport department and traffic police. To avoid this, we are keen to set up DUMTA Act in the city,” Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami said.

According to the proposal, DUMTA would control all agencies involved in road maintenance, engineering, traffic and transport. The authority will be made accountable for smooth traffic movement in the national capital.

“The Traffic Police is a part of the Delhi Police, which is under the Home Ministry. For creation of such an authority, approval from Ministry of Home Affairs is needed,” an official said.
