A security audit of Wi-Fi connections in the city has shown a sharp decrease in the number of insecure connections. Out of 1,700 connections this year, eight were found insecure (about 0.5 per cent) as compared to 341 out of 2,301 (about 15 per cent) in 2011. Police said the improvement was a result of awareness programme and subsequent steps taken by service providers.

On the back drop of the rising number of cyber crime cases, the city police had carried out a security audit of the Wi-Fi connections across the city. Deputy commissioner of police (cyber crime and economic offences wing) said, "A large number of connections had no encryption security. We then organised awareness programmes. We had also asked service providers to carry out routine checks and ensure security of the connections. The fall in the number is significant."

Shinde added, "Though just eight of 1,700 connections were insecure this year, there is scope for improvement in the security of over 245 connections. We have taken action against eight insecure connections and notices have been served to them. The scanning is not over yet. Within next one month, we will scan rest of the connections."
