Chennai, Nov 10: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is planning to set up a 2,000 mw nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu with an estimated investment of Rs 11,000 crore. The Centre has given its nod to NTPC to generate power, using nuclear plants.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday to announce the company’s overall performance and future plans, T Sankaralingam, chairman and managing director, NTPC, said that the company will take time to decide on the place in the state and time for the plant.
“We don’t want to be a competitor to the Nuclear Power Corporation Ltd (NPCL). Rather we will complement NPCL’s efforts in adding more power to the nation,” he said. This is a part of the company’s 20,000 mw additional power generation plan during the current Plan period, he added.
He said the much-delayed 1,000 mw coal-fired Ennore power project, being promoted in joint venture with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), with an estimated investment of Rs 4,500 crore will get the environment clearance soon. “We expect to get the environmental clearance soon and will be floating a global tender for equipment supply in a week’s time,” he said.
According to him, the Ennore project - NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Ltd - is being set up in a debt/equity ratio of 70:30. Both NTPC and TNEB will hold 50% each in the equity capital. “We expect to commence work on the project in March 2007,” he said, adding the project is expected to be completed in 40-45 months.
The CMD also said that the 1,000 mw Cheyyur (Tamil Nadu) project is facing the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations. “We have tied up with Anna University to find out feasibility on how to go ahead with the project. Unless the report comes and found feasible, NTPC will not decide on other things,” he added.
Incorporated in 2003, NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Ltd is a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to develop a 1,000 mw coal-fired power plant at Ennore in the outskirt of Chennai in two stages (2 x 500 mw). The project is scheduled to go on stream by the end of the 11th Plan period.
