Himachal Pradesh police’s newly designed interactive web portal ‘Kanoon Vyavastha’ has been thrown open to citizens, tourists and all those who wish to help the police curb crime in the state.

Now, people can even make online traffic challan payment for violation of the Motor Vehicle Act. Citizens, who are not keen to go to police stations can use the new technologies to reach out to the law enforcing agencies, who are just a click away.

“Complainants in certain cases can get a response within a few minutes, and efforts are being made to nab culprits, including those involved in serious offences of assaults, rash and negligent driving, molestation and cheating, in no time,” said Director General of Police I D Bhandari.

Bhandari terms some of the new innovations as the beginning of the second phase of good policing in Himachal Pradesh.

On November 28, an SMS-generated complaint relating to illegal mining in Dehra Sub-Division received at 10 pm prompted the local SHO to raid the site within a few hours. The accused were nabbed and a fine of Rs 12,700 was imposed on them, which was recovered on the spot.

Of the 1,821 SMSes received by the police at its 24X7 control room this year, 22 FIRs were registered without the complainants having to visit the police stations. One FIR was related to a rape case in Hamirpur district. Since the launch of the SMS service in May 2010, 4,392 SMSes have been received, of which 82 FIRs were registered. “Considering the overwhelming response from people, we propose to set-up a separate cell at the police headquarter for prompt/instant action even before the SMS is forwarded to the SHOs concerned. This will cut down time and make the service effective in tracking crime,” Bhandari said.

Complainants can get a response within a few hours of registering a complaint. “The complainant can check the status of the FIR, including updates about arrests and seizures by going online. In case someone is not satisfied with the progress of the case, then he/she can post a comment. Officers concerned will not only be responding, but also passing instructions to the SPs,” the DGP said.
