Chennai, October 2:: Buoyed by the ban on smoking in public places that went into force across the country on Thursday, a jubilant Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said his next big wish is to see a ban on all tobacco products.

Ramadoss, who persisted with his dream of enforcing the ban on smoking, unfazed by criticism from top Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to members of civil society, took part in the campaign to publicise the salient provisions of the law banning smoking in public places.

Distributing pamphlets highlighting the ban to passengers at a bus terminus here, Ramadoss said "my intention and my aim is to make India a tobacoo-free nation. But I do not have the power to do so."

He said 152 countries had signed a WHO-supported international agreement to ban the production of tobacco products in a phased manner.

"Though we wish to ban the production of tobacco-related products, we cannot do it immediately. We have to take into consideration thousands of farmers who are cultivating tobacco. We have to provide them with alternative employment before introducing such a ban," he said.

People appreciate to be given advisories and not bans. Prohibition had its travails, come and go as many times as of no account. Now this ban on smoking too and consumption of tobacco products in other forms. Most smaoking is in the country side. No one will see the "no smoking " campaign there. Perhaps smoking is an inherent part of the culture in the villages. Go on punishing people, Mr. Anbumani Ramdos, for electing you to the parliament and then making you a minister. All his ideas are half baked. First he fought to remove the head of the All Institutes of Medical Sciences which is not his business at all. And now this ban on smoking. Ban is never the successful route to any plan. Just advisory notices are all that should be made. Establish good and free hospitals as of yore. Give people medical care , free of charge all over India. That should be all. Be an ideal health Minister, not one to dish out gimmicks.

Both father Ramdoss and son think that they are champions for health care. Banning a product is not the answer. Proper education is the only solution. States will loose revenue by baning products and blackmarketers will make more money.

Good idea Mr ramdoss, Sensible approach. Blaming the consumers for smoking tobacco products in public places better stop the production. That will be better than the double standard of the Govt: namely producing the materials in the country or importing the stuff and telling the public not to smoke. Any how our sincere support for Mr Ramdoss for the venture.

A total ban on production of tobacco will save countless lives, like mine. I just hope that the great Ramadoss will find a possibility to do so,of course, after providing an alternate for those who have set their lives producing tobacco products.
