New Delhi, June 10: Direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasters may be queuing up to start operations, but colour television (CTV) makers are having second thoughts about the market’s potential. After launching its DTH TV with much fanfare in January, LG Electronics’ product has still not hit the market while arch rival Samsung India has decided to avoid burning its fingers by putting off an entry in the category.
LG’s product group head-consumer electronics CM Singh said the company’s DTH TV is still in the test marketing phase and may be launched next month. Incidentally, the company had in January said it would take a first mover advantage by launching the DTH TV in February-March 2005.
According to industry sources, LG’s DTH integrated TV (with an in-built set top box) did not take off as consumers still opt to buy only DTH set top box which can be attached to their existing TV sets. Samsung India, in fact, is believed to have taken that as a learning and has decided not to launch a DTH TV just yet.
