Agonised Vietnamese rescuers reported yet another disappointment as they frantically searched for the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 Boeing 777 plane that is suspected to have crashed.

A Vietnamese rescue helicopter has retrieved a floating yellow object from the sea and determined it was not a life raft from a missing Malaysia Airlines plane, as was earlier suspected, the country's civil aviation authority said on Monday.

"It has salvaged the object, at the notice and request by Malaysia's rescue centre, 130 km southwest of Tho Chu island. The object has been identified as a moss-covered cap of a cable reel," the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said on its website.

It did not specify whether or not the object was part of a plane but said photographs would be sent to its command centre.

Vietnam scrambled two helicopters from southern Phu Quoc island on Monday afternoon to retrieve the item spotted earlier by a search plane that was suspected to be that of the missing and ill-fated Malaysia Airlines plane.

A Vietnamese navy plane has spotted an object suspected of belonging to the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that went missing early on Saturday with 239 people on board, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said on its website on Sunday. The authority said it was too dark to be certain the object was part of the missing plane, and that more aircraft would be dispatched to investigate the site, in waters off southern Vietnam, in the morning.
