Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit launched a scathing attack on the BJP in her Independence Day address, accusing the party of misleading people on power tariff, and spoke of the government’s achievements. Speaking at the Chhatrasal Stadium, Dikshit said the power situation in the national capital is “comfortable” now because of reforms that the Congress government has undertaken over the past 15 years.
“There used to be power cuts for more than 11 hours (when the BJP was in power). There was unrest on the streets because of long power cuts. The power situation is comfortable now because of reforms we initiated. Their government in 1998 was even unable to meet the demand of 1,900 MW, whereas we are successfully meeting peak demand of over 6,000 MW. The per capita power consumption in Delhi is 1,450 units , which is highest in the country,” she said.
Dikshit said there was no magic wand to effect a reduction in tariff. She said electricity was cheaper in Delhi when compared to other metropolitan cities. “People are unable to digest the politically motivated promise to bring down power tariff by 30 per cent. There is no magic wand to effect such a huge reduction. Power tariff is much cheaper in Delhi compared to neighbouring towns and other metropolitan cities,” she said.
