SummaryGJM moved the apex court against the order, complaining it was not given the liberty to respond.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) denied Monday it was associated with the shutdown in Darjeeling demanding Gorkhaland. “We are not at all responsible for either the bandh or any other form of agitation,” its counsel informed a Supreme Court bench of Justices A K Patnaik and J S Khehar.

The bench was hearing an appeal by GJM against a Calcutta HC order, issuing a showcause notice to the Gorkha outfit asking why it should not be made to pay compensation for economic loss incurred due to the shutdown.

The HC had declared the GJM-sponsored shutdown in Darjeeling illegal and asked the state government to estimate the economic loss and damage to public property. The state had informed that a loss of Rs 69 crore was caused due to the shutdown in August.

GJM moved the apex court against the order, complaining it was not given the liberty to respond.

Even as the state government disputed the contention by GJM it was not responsible for the shutdown, the bench said it would let the court examine all submissions.
