Nine IPL team franchisees bought 37 players on Sunday, spending $11.89 million for the sixth edition of the tournament.
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell hit the jackpot, fetching $1 million from Mumbai Indians, while Sri Lankan bowler Ajanta Mendis went to Pune Warriors India for $7,25,000. Kane Richardson was lapped up by the Pune IPL team for $7,00,000.
Maxwell was bought by Mumbai Indians in an intense bidding war with Kalanithi Maran-owned Hyderabad Sunrisers. Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar went to Pune Warriors for $675,000, a huge increase on his base price of $100,000.
Indian paceman RP Singh was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for $ 400,000. South African all-rounder Christopher Morris was bought by Chennai Super Kings for $625,000 after an intense three-way bidding war with Mumbai Indians and RCB. As many as 108 players went under the hammer.
On Maxwell buy, Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani said: “He is an upcoming youngster. He can bat, bowl and, I think, is a great fielder. We had thought of some names before we came here and he was one of them.”
South African all-rounder Johan Botha was snared by Delhi Daredevils for $450,000. However, Australian captain Michael Clarke and his predecessor, Ricky Ponting, appeared to have lost charm and were sold on their base price of $400,000.
Domestic players Jaydev Unadkat and Pankaj Singh, too, made it big. Jaydev was bought for $525,000 by Bangalore, much higher than his base price of $100,000. Pankaj was bought for $150,000 by the same franchise. The contracts offered at this year’s auction are for just this season as all the players will go under the hammer next year.
IPL chairman Rajeeve Shukla said: “The nine franchisses have bought 37 players spending $11.89 million for the sixth edition of IPL.”
On the non-inclusion of Pakistan players, he said: “We have nothing against them and we have not given a serious thought about including them so far.”
Shilpa Shetty, owner of Rajasthan Royals, said: “This time’s bidding process cannot be compared with last year's, because this one was not a full fludged one, with new IPL team coming in
