Los Angeles: Robert Pattinson-Kristen Stewart starrer 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' has broken the record of highest grossing film by raking in a spectacular USD 72.7 million on its opening day from 4,024 theatres.

The vampire romance has snatched the best opening day record from Warner Bros 'The Dark Knight', which had made $67.2 million from 4,366 runs last year before making a three-day opening weekend of USD 158.4 million, the Variety magazine reported.

The opening day for "New Moon" posted more than a 100 per cent gain over the first Friday of "Twilight" which made USD 36 million a year ago and a three-day weekend of USD 69.6 million.

The film, second in the 'Twilight' series, deals with the love story between a vampire and a human.
