With Irda approving health insurance regulations, policyholders can expect transparency and fairer treatment from insurers

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irda) finally approved the health insurance regulations last week and these will come into force from the date of publication in the official gazette.

All health insurance policies will now provide for entry age up to 65 years and will not have any exit age for renewal once the proposal is accepted, provided the policy is continuously renewed without break. IRDA has probably specified about the meaning of break in insurance. It should be further clearly mentioned in the new policy because some insurance companies are not allowing even a single day of grace period to the policy holders for renewal and treating it as a break in insurance whereas what IRDA has prescribed is a period of 15 days for renewal. Need clarification on this and it should be made compulsory for the insurance companies to follow and all companies must be advised to print this on the policy documents.
