New Delhi: A draft of a new immigration law has been prepared by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, which will now initiate consultations with Law and Home ministries to finalise the document before tabling it in Parliament.

The draft was prepared after a need was felt to have a new immigration regulation law in the wake of changing global circumstances and growing incidents of Indians being exploited in absence of a more regulative legislation with strict penal provisions.

"A draft for the new (immigration) legislation is ready," Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi told PTI.

Describing the draft law as "progressive", Ravi said his ministry will now discuss it with various stakeholders, including Law Ministry, Home Ministry and External Affairs Ministry.

"Then we will move Parliament to pass the new enactment to have regulated migration," he added.

The draft provides for more power to the state police to deal with unscrupulous agents who dupe those migrating to other countries.

It also aims at fixing responsibility of agents and officials involved in the immigration process.

This is about NRIs and their betterment. Not about internal issues. Anyway, Politicians have always exploited muslims and that include the BJPs. They instigated hindus against muslim in the name of Temple and what did they do when they came to power. nothing. The upper caste people are bitter about the qouta system and spill their anger agaisnt the muslims. You kicked the lower castes for hundreds of yrs

The new has been framed without any body's consent. That's why all Ist world countries still dont accept India as a true open democratic country. The minister shud have asked for the public opinion in general and the opinion of NRIs in particular. It'll be sort of a forced law on the concerned and affected people. The Indian Govt shud have open suggestions before passing the bill in the parliament.

Legalize bangladeshis, import more pakistani mullahs, no questions to illegal migrants from pakistan in kashmir since 1947. Congress knows that its winning formula in 2009 was SC ST OBC Muslims. So only uneducated maulvis can issue fatwas to get congress elected in 2014 to get Rahul Gandhi as PM. He has a dream, Indians divided. I wonder what will congress do to attract SCs and STs??

What is the idea of such news when you fail to give details what this bill is and how it effects the NRI and other people who might think of migrating to India? It took years to give temporary type of duel citizenship with PIO cards but it has not helped the NRI

Thanks Amit Purohit, we have actually forgotten Singh's sleepless nights. How short is public memory! By the number of atrocities committed on Indian's in Australia, our PM should be suffering from acute insomnia, just like poor Michel Jackson suffered. Hope, he does not take any extreme step, unlike MJ.

These congressis have always stood up to destroy the country. The Indian consulates abroad are just a joke , they treat their own citizens with dis-respect, i went to renew my passport and was made to stan in line in the rain for over an hour.. have you ever seen such disrespect by a government of its country towards a US or a british national ? Unless the Indian Government starts respecting its own citizens why will others respect us ?these politicians should be paraded on donkeys with their faces blackened and garlanded with shoes
