The Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists Thursday proposed that Supreme Court Chief Justice Khilraj Regmi be made the new prime minister.

The proposal moved by Maoist chief Prachanda was unanimously adopted by the UCPN-M delegates in Hetaunda. The party took the initiative formally after President Ram Baran Yadav, caretaker PM Bhattarai, Regmi and Prachanda decided that such a move would end the dispute over who would be heading the electoral government.

Other political parties, including the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist besides constitutional experts, have however opposed the move, saying it infringes upon the principle of separation of powers and checks and balances.
